This is a more hearty version of the green bean casserole recipe using crispy or frenchs onions. The low-calorie version can be found here: Green Bean Casserole with Cashews and Crispy Onions. This bacon version is more full and a bit more savory.
How To Make Green Bean Casserole With (Frenchs) Crispy Onions
- Step 1: Cook the bacon in pan and render the oils
- Step 2: Add the onions and aromatics and saute
- Step 3: Add flour, beans, and half and half, mix and pour into a baking dish
- Step 4: Pop in oven for 20 minutes
- Step 5: Top with crispy onions (frenchs onions) and cashews or favorite crunchy crushed nuts
I have used both regular crispy onions and also the French’s brand fried onions for the green bean casserole recipe. TBH, I do like the French’s brand, however, if you are able to find a brand that uses healthier oils (non-vegetable) that is preferred. The texture of the frenchs is okay imo, however.
Make It Anytime
You can make this at any time and this casserole makes a great side dish for gatherings or to be honest, imo it makes a great meal – filled with vegetables, your meat, and also your carbs with the added flour (or gluten-free flour of choice).
To round out the flavor and make it bolder, choose a hearty cheddar cheese. If you want to make it even more dynamic you can add different types of cheeses into this such as parmigiano, pecorino, or a spicy type cheese. For cheddar cheese, you can try a white cheddar as well. White cheddar cheese tend to have a deeper flavor.
Sourcing bacon from local, pasture raised, and transparent companies increase nutritional value in the foods we consume. If it’s not possible to get a good quality bacon from your local market, US Wellness Meats and Butcher Box might be options.
