In case you’ve been living under a rock, there’s this thing going around call “Dalgona Coffee.”
It started as a viral video on Tik Tok and has now gone viral almost everywhere. I truly cannot scroll through any of my feeds without seeing something about Dalgona Coffee:)
To make, it’s very simple and only requires 3 ingredients.
Basically, you add the 3 ingredients (instant coffee, hot water, and sugar) in a bowl and start whisking. If you don’t have an electric hand mixer I’m sorry! No, but it will take a bit of elbow grease for about a min or so to get it to froth up.
Once it’s nice and frothy, you have yourself a really nice texturized treat…and to my surprise, it actually does taste good. However, I think the trick is to use a good quality instant coffee.
Can You Make Dalgona Coffee Without Instant Coffee?
The short answer is no. I have seen some try to use regular drip coffee with sugar and try to reduce it down to a syrup and then try to froth it. However, the consistency does not come out the same.
There is something in the instant coffee granules that make it froth. Some say it’s the way the granules are aerated. Others say it’s the additives in the coffee granules. Either way, the best result, I have found, comes from actually using the instant coffee granules themselves and not a substitute for now.
I also tried using Teccino “herbal coffee,” which I love and is made with dandelion. This does not work either. (sad face)
Can You Make Dalgona Coffee Decaffeinated?
Yes, you can! I actually make the decaffeinated version because caffeinated coffee does not sit well with me all the time. The brand I use is Mount Hagen and it is pretty deep in flavor. I was not disappointed!
Can You Use Sugar Substitutes?
I have read a few people try to use monk fruit sweetener and have said that using this makes the froth last only for a few minutes.
