What Is Spirulina?
Spirulina is a blue-green algae (classified as cyanobacteria) and contains chlorophyll, which may assist by attaching itself to toxins in the body and flushing them out. Spirulina is about 60% protein by composition and contains all of the essential amino acids. It is also a great source of phytonutrients, vitamins, and minerals.
What Does Spirulina Taste Like?
Spirulina actually has a very umami and savory taste. It is an algae after all. The good news is that it does not taste bitter – a common issue when making things you want to be neutral or sweet like smoothies or energy snacks. Hence, you never really have to add extra ingredients just to cover up the taste. For the recipe below, there is much payoff when you add vanilla to the drink…as it really brings out all of the rest of the flavors.
A Natural Energy Enhancer
I have found that spirulina gives great natural energy, nourishes the nervous system, and fights fatigue. Since it also contains chlorophyll, which is a natural chelating agent, it will help to detox the body while you go about doing your usual activities.
Other Ways to Use Spirulina
- In vegetable juices
- In homemade energy snacks, bars, and bites
- In smoothies and bowls
- Sprinkled on salads
Best Spirulina Brands?
Spirulina can come in powdered and tablet or capsule form. The one I use is a powder from Nutrex and is a Hawaiian Spirulina. In addition to that, some others have liked the following:
- Nutrex, Hawaiian Spirulina
- Zhou Spirulina
- Earthrise, tablet form
- E3 Live (comes in frozen, powder, and tablet/capsule forms)
Alternative to a Blender
You can use a fork, a blender bottle, my favorite lightweight hand-held milk frother! (that lives on my counter). A handy dandy tool to make drinks galore.
Other Superfood drinks? Try a Reishi Hot Cocoa.
Spirulina Energy & Detox Milk
An energy-boosting milk you can make quickly and easily without the use of a blender!
Ingredients
- 12 oz almond milk
- 5 drops of stevia ( sub monk fruit extract or agave sweetened to taste)
- 3/4 tsp spirulina
- 1 drop vanilla extract
- 1/4 tsp maca powder
- 1-2 dashes of fresh nutmeg
- 2 dashes of Ceylon cinnamon
- pinch of Himalayan salt
Instructions
- In a cup, add milk then all of ingredients above.
- Shake, Froth, or blend - You can use a blender if you want, however, you can also use a shaker bottle, or this awesome lightweight frother.
- Enjoy!
Notes
- You can use regular cinnamon in place of ceylon. Ceylon is considered "true" cinnamon and is understood to have health benefits.
- You can add less spirulina in order to have more of the milky taste. The spirulina, however, I find is what gives this concoction its primary energizing effects, so if you're into that, add more!
- Substitute whatever sweetener you would like including coconut nectar
